Going Up Against GEICO

What to expect when GEICO is the insurance company on your injury claim.

GEICO (the second-largest auto insurer in the US) writes a significant share of Rhode Island and Massachusetts policies. Their claim process is heavily scripted — which creates both predictability and pitfalls for injured claimants.

How GEICO handles injury claims.

01Scripted intake and early offers.

GEICO's first-call process is standardized. Adjusters are trained to gather enough information to close the file cheaply and quickly. If you don't have a lawyer yet, you're the one defending your case value — against a trained professional.

02Independent medical examinations (IMEs) are used strategically.

Once treatment extends beyond a few visits, GEICO may schedule an IME with a carrier-friendly physician. The IME report is rarely favorable to the claimant. We prepare clients for these exams and supplement the record as needed.

03Property damage pressure to accept settlement.

GEICO often tries to resolve the property damage claim fast and bundle it with a bodily injury release. These should stay separate — and you should never sign a BI release before you know what your injury case is worth.

04Policy limits disclosure.

GEICO is not always forthcoming about the at-fault driver's policy limits. Rhode Island law allows plaintiffs to demand disclosure in certain circumstances. We know when and how to ask.

What to do if GEICO is on your claim.

Don't accept a quick settlement before treatment is finished.

Once you sign a release, you can't come back for more — even if new injuries surface.

Document everything in writing.

Emails beat phone calls. We generally put major communications in writing for exactly this reason.

Let us do the talking.

As soon as we file a letter of representation, GEICO must deal with us instead of you. That simple step changes the power dynamic.
